Mark Cuban, the billionaire investor made famous by the reality television series Shark Tank, has changed his tune on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in recent months.

Cuban made headlines when he said he’d “rather have bananas than bitcoin,” calling crypto “too complicated.” But the Dallas Mavericks owner has since come around to cryptocurrencies, praising the emerging decentralized finance (DeFi) space—which is largely built on top of the second-largest cryptocurrency after bitcoin, ethereum.

Now, as the bitcoin and cryptocurrency market price soars over $2 trillion, Cuban has revealed that he expects ethereum’s long-awaited 2.0 upgrade will spark the development of apps that “dwarf” bitcoin.

“I think the applications leveraging smart contracts and extensions on ethereum will dwarf bitcoin,” Cuban told journalist Laura Shin, speaking on her Unchained podcast.

“Bitcoin, right now, has evolved to be primarily a store value, and it’s very difficult to use it for anything else … You really have to work a lot harder on bitcoin than you do on ethereum.”

The bitcoin price has soared by around 700% over the last 12 months, climbing as the likes of high-profile billionaires Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey give it their backing, Wall Street giants roll out bitcoin services, and investors fret that inflation could be about to undermine the value of traditional currencies.

However, the huge bitcoin price rally has been eclipsed by ethereum (and a handful of smaller cryptocurrencies), with the ethereum price adding a blistering 1,100% since April 2020.

Cuban expects coming upgrades to ethereum, not expected to be completed until at least 2022, will mean it is “going to give some people a reason to use ethereum as a store of value over bitcoin.”

Last year, ethereum began implementing its major 2.0 upgrade, designed to improve scalability and security and will see the ethereum network move from bitcoin’s proof-of-work (PoW) consensus algorithm to the proof-of-stake (PoS) algorithm.

This will essentially mean those who receive ethereum’s ether tokens as a reward for maintaining the network will be removed from the process in order to optimize the settlement of transactions—with ethereum users instead able to deposit their tokens to secure the network and earn rewards instead.

“With proof-of-stake, you’re going to be able to have, some multiple, a significantly higher multiple, in transactions per second, that’s going to improve the utilization and the opportunities to create on ethereum,” Cuban told Shin, pointing to the latest cryptocurrency craze for NFTs (non-fungible tokens) as “just proof of concepts” for what smart contracts can do.

“In a few years, I think ethereum and maybe two or three other blockchains will have their place, and those will be the winners,” Cuban said, adding that he’s not about to sell his bitcoin but that he does “own a lot more” ethereum than bitcoin.

The Rojiblancos are sweating on the fitness of a prized asset heading into the business end of the campaign

Atletico Madrid have been dealt a potential blow in their pursuit of the Liga title after revealing that Luis Suarez has picked up an injury.

Suarez had to withdraw from the club’s latest training session on Monday after suffering a knock, with head coach Diego Simeone now sweating on his fitness ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.

Atletico have confirmed the news via their official website, but have not been able to give a specific timeframe for his recovery.

What’s been said?

“Luis Suarez has suffered a muscle injury in his left leg,” the club’s statement reads.

“Our player, after feeling some discomfort in training this Wednesday, underwent tests with the club’s medical services that confirmed the injury of the Uruguayan international.

“It is pending evolution.”

What games could Suarez miss?

Suarez was already unavailable for selection for Atletico’s next La Liga fixture against Real Betis on Sunday due to suspension, but could now be facing an even longer spell on the sidelines.

The Spanish top-flight leaders are due to welcome Eibar to the Wanda Metropolitano seven days later, before wrapping up their April schedule with games against Huesca and Athletic Bilbao.

Supporters will hope that Suarez can make a full recovery in time for a crucial meeting with fellow title rivals Barcelona on May 9, with there little margin error remaining for Simeone’s men after their inconsistent recent run of form.

The state of play at the top of La Liga

Atletico were 10 points clear at the Liga summit back in January, but that gap now stands at just a single point following their 1-0 loss to Sevilla last weekend.

Barca have won their last six games to move into second, with Real Madrid sitting just two points further back in third with nine matches remaining.

Suarez’s importance to Atletico

Suarez has been the main driving force behind Atletico’s latest title tilt, having been snapped up from Barca for just €6 million last summer.

The Uruguayan frontman has hit 19 goals in 26 La Liga outings so far this term, and is currently joint-second in the race for the Pichichi – four goals behind former team-mate Lionel Messi.

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero would consider joining Tottenham Hotspur when he leaves his current club at the end of the season.

The Argentine wants to remain in the Premier League after 10 years at the EtihadStadium, and he is even ready to sacrifice Champions League football for next season in order to do so.

With 181 Premier League goals in 272 games for Man City, Aguero has established himself as one of the best strikers in the English top-flight, and landing such a player will definitely boost Spurs’ chances of winning silverware and returning to Europe’s elite competition.

While the 32-year-old will be signed as a free agent, his wages could prove too much for a side like Tottenham.

Chairman Daniel Levy has been prudent with his side’s finances for a while, and he would have to break his policies in order to bring Aguero to North London.

With four Premier League titles and five League Cups to his name, the Man City legend is the type of serial winner Spurs need in their dressing room, and his experience and quality will very much come in handy.

Tottenham fans cannot believe that Aguero would be open to joining their club, and some of them have taken to Twitter to react thus:

While the Portuguese is not a huge fan of a two-striker system, things could change with two of the best finishers on the planet at his disposal.

It is too early to predict how things can go during the summer transfer window, but Aguero definitely will not be short of suitors, and Tottenham will strike gold should they land such a player.

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) has argued that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is not eligible under the constitution to contest for President.

The AGF argued that, having not been born a Nigerian or by Nigerian parents, and having not met the provisions of Sections 25(1) &(2) and 131(a) of the constitution, Atiku would be violating Section 118(1)(k) of the Electoral Act should he put himself forward as candidate.

These form part of the AGF’s arguments in support of the suit filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja by the Incorporated Trustees of Egalitarian Mission for Africa (EMA).

The EMA is challenging Atiku’s eligibility to contest for President and praying the court to hold among others, that considering the provisions of sections 25(1) &(2) and 131(a) of the constitution and the circumstances surrounding his birth, the former vice president cannot contest for the top office.

In documents filed for the AGF by a team of lawyers, led by Oladipo Okpeseyi (SAN), it was agreed that, as argued by the plaintiff, Atiku is not a Nigerian citizen by birth.

Although the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/177/2019 was filed before the 2019 presidential election, it is yet to be heard and determined.

However, it was mentioned on March 15, during which Justice Inyang Ekwo noted that the suit was ripe for hearing and fixed May 4, for that purpose.

The AGF in the affidavit said: “The first defendant (Atiku) is not qualified to contest to be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The first defendant is not a fit and proper person to be a candidate for election to the office of president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The first defendant was born on the 25th of November, 1946 at Jada, at the time in Northern Cameroon. By the plebiscite of 1961, the town of Jada was incorporated into Nigeria.

“The first defendant is a Nigerian by virtue of the 1961 plebiscite, but not a Nigerian by birth. The first defendant’s parents died before the 1961 plebiscite.”

In his written address, the AGF argued that the effect of the June1, 1961 plebiscite was to have the people of. Northern Cameroon integrated into Nigeria as new citizens of the country, even after Nigeria’s independence.

He added: “This qualified all those born before the 1961 plebiscIte as citizens of Nigeria, but not Nigerian citizen by birth. Consequently, only citizens born after the 1961 plebiscite are citizens of Nigeria by birth.”

He cited provisions of the 1960, 1963, 1979 and 1999 constitutions and noted that the “reasoning of the lawmakers in ensuring that the persons to be the President of Nigeria is a citizen of Nigeria by birth is because such a person is the number one citizen and the image of the Nigerian state.”

The AGF argued that, where it is revealed that a person was born outside Nigeria before Nigeria’s independence in 1960, in a location which was never part of Nigeria until June 1, 1961, as it is in this case, such a person cannot claim citizenship of Nigeria by birth.

“This is even more so where his parents do not belong to any tribe indigenous to Nigeria until their death. The facts of his (Atiku’s) birth on the Cameroonian territory to Cameroonian parents remain unchallenged.

“At best, the first defendant can only acquire Nigerian citizenship by the 1961 plebiscite. The citizenship qualifications under Section 26 and 27 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999), by implication, has limited the first defendant’s privileges or rights and cannot be equal or proportional to the privileges of other citizens who acquire their citizenship status by birth.

“This would include the legal preclusion of the first defendant from contesting for the office of the President of Nigeria.

The AGF noted that the only situation where Atiku could have acquired Nigerian citizenship by birth under the 1999 Constitution was if both or either of his parents and grand parents were Nigerian citizens by birth.

He added that another way would have been “if either his parents had become Nigerian citizen by virtue of Section 25(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which must be in compliance with Sections 26 and 27of the same constitution.

“With no concrete proof of compliance, we submit that the first defendant cannot contest election to the office of the Nigerian President.”

Section 26 contains the process of obtaining citizenship by registration, while Section 27 provides for the process of obtaining citizenship by naturalisation.

The AGF argued that Atiku, having contested election to the office of the Vice President before now, knowing that he is not a Nigeria citizen by birth, committed an offence under Section 118(1)(k) of the Electoral Act.

Atiku and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on whose platform he contested the last election, have denied the plaintiff’s claims and prayed the court to dismiss the suit for lacking in merit.

They also filed a joint notice of objection, in which they insisted that Atiku is “a bonafide citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Atiku stated that aside serving as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, he held many public/private offices, including serving as Governor of Adamawa State and as a Commissioned Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service.

He said both his parents, grandparents and great grandparents were born in Nigeria and they lived, died as Nigerians and were buried in Nigeria.

Atiku argued that he is qualified and eligible to be elected into the office of the President of Nigeria, adding that the plaintiff filed the suit in bad faith and in an attempt to malign his person and integrity.

He queried the plaintiff’s right to challenge his nationality, arguing that it failed to show the interest it has above other citizens of Nigeria to be entitled to approach the court on the issue.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has confirmed abduction of members of Anglican Church in Kaduna State.

The abductors, according to CAN, have already contacted the Church to demand N100 million ransom.

The Nation had reported female members of the Church were among 25 persons abducted during blockade of Kaduna-Kachia road in the early hours of Tuesday.

Confirming abduction of the Anglican Church members, Kaduna CAN chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, clarified that, of the 15 members of the Church on the journey, only four were whisked away by the kidnappers.

The CAN Chairman said other occupants of the bus fled into the bush during the attack and some of them sustained gun injuries in the process.

According to him: “My conversation with the Anglican church is they were 15 members in the bus but the others ran into the bush and others were shot and sustained injuries but the bandits took four persons; one old woman and three young ladies.

“They took a lot of people, they even contacted them (the Church) already asking for N100 million. That is what they said.

“It is a very sad thing nine people were killed and we are not sure of the number of persons kidnapped; that 28 that some people are quoting is an estimated number,” he said.

Mohamed Salah scored for the 26th time this season in all competitions and fellow Egyptian Trezeguet ended an eight-month goal drought in the English Premier League at the weekend.

Salah claimed the second goal as Liverpool moved back into contention for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification with a 3-0 triumph at Arsenal.

Trezeguet struck twice as mid-table Aston Villa bagged three goals in the final 12 minutes to overturn a deficit and inflict a 3-1 defeat on strugglers Fulham.

Here, AFP Sport rounds up the performances of Africans in the major European leagues:
ENGLAND

MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool)
He helped Liverpool maintain their recent revival with a goal in a confident win. Liverpool took the lead through Diogo Jota’s 64th-minute goal. Salah netted four minutes later as he took advantage of poor defending from Gabriel to slide a cool finish through Bernd Leno’s legs.

TREZEGUET (Aston Villa)
The winger inspired a 3-1 comeback home win against Fulham. Villa was trailing when Trezeguet came to the rescue with two goals in three minutes. The 26-year-old, who had not scored since July, equalised in the 78th minute with a clinical finish from Tyrone Mings’ cross. Trezeguet struck again, meeting Keinan Davis’s cross with a fine volleyed finish.

MBAYE DIAGNE (West Brom)
The Senegal striker grabbed his second goal for West Brom in a stunning 5-2 win at Chelsea. Diagne’s previous goal since arriving on loan from Galatasaray in January came against Manchester United and he punished another of the Premier League’s aristocrats at Stamford Bridge. The 29-year-old capped a superb Albion attack with a cool finish from the edge of the penalty area in the 68th minute.
ITALY

SIMY, AHMAD BENALI (Crotone), VICTOR OSIMHEN (Napoli)
Simy continued his remarkable form with a brace, but basement club Crotone fell 4-3 at Napoli. Libya midfielder Benali provided the cross for Simy’s first after 25 minutes and the Nigerian added a second after the break to bring his campaign tally to 15 goals, including eight in the last five games. Fellow Nigerian Osimhen was also on target, scoring his fourth Serie A goal of the season for Napoli.

HAMED TRAORE (Sassuolo)
Ivorian midfielder Traore tapped in from close range for his side’s opening goal to pull Sassuolo level midway through the second half in a 2-2 home draw against Roma. The 21-year-old found the net for the second consecutive league game to lift his season league total to four goals.

FRANCK KESSIE (AC Milan)
Kessie set up Norwegian Jens Petter Hauge to equalise three minutes from time and rescue a 1-1 draw against Sampdoria. The Ivorian then missed a chance to snatch a last-gasp winner when his shot hit the post in injury time.
GERMANY

ERIC-MAXIM CHOUPO MOTING (Bayern Munich)
With Robert Lewandowski injured, the Cameroon striker made only his fifth league start this season for Bayern in a crucial 1-0 win over second-place RB Leipzig to keep the Bundesliga leaders on course for a ninth successive title. Leon Goretzka’s superb strike sealed a win that pulled Bayern seven points clear.

DIADIE SAMASSEKOU (Hoffenheim)
The Mali midfielder was booked for fouling Rani Khedira — a brother of Germany’s 2014 World Cup winner Sami — during his side’s 2-1 defeat at Augsburg. It was Hoffenheim’s third loss in a row, and Samassekou’s team dropped to 12th.
FRANCE

WAHBI KHAZRI, DENIS BOUANGA (Saint-Etienne)
Two of Saint-Etienne’s African stars combined to haul their team seven points clear of the Ligue 1 drop zone with goals in a 2-0 win at Nimes. Khazri withdrew from Tunisia’s final two Cup of Nations qualifiers but returned in style for his club, blasting in the opener from 20 yards. Bouanga, who scored last week as Gabon qualified for next year’s finals, added Saint-Etienne’s second with a rocket from even further out.
