Ortom sues Akume for N60b over alleged libel

BY Uja Emmanuel/ THE NATION

Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, on Friday instituted a N60 billion suit against the Minister of Special Duties and Inter Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, at the Makurdi High Court.

The suit No. MHC/268/2021 was filed by Okon N. Efut, SAN and four other lawyers.

Governor Ortom is seeking N50 billion as general damages for libel and N10 billion as exemplary and aggravated damages.

The writ of summons was backed by 17-paragraph statement of claim.

In the statement of claim, Governor Ortom is seeking a declaration that the text of Senator Akume’s press conference on 30th August, 2021, in Abuja and the reports in various national dailies is scandalous, malicious and injurious to his person.

He complained that the press conference was intended to lower his estimation before right-thinking members of the society and to expose him to hatred, contempt and ridicule.

The Governor is seeking perpetual injunction restraining the defendant by himself or through any agent, servants or privies from similar or further publication of any defamatory statement against him.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of other leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Benue State on Monday, Akume had called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Benue State, saying that Ortom had lost control of the security situation in the state.

He also condemned what it called the governor’s “penchant for verbally attacking” President Muhammadu Buhari without regard for his age and office.

No date has yet been fixed for the case

Premier League giants Manchester United have, on Friday evening, confirmed when recent addition Cristiano Ronaldo is set to link up with the rest of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

CR7 returns

A fine summer all told on the red half of Manchester of course came to a spectacular head this day last week.

As if the high-profile additions of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane were not enough, those in a position of power at Old Trafford set the world of football alight with their third and final reinforcement to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

The player brought in? 5-time Ballon d’Or winner and Reds prodigal son Cristiano Ronaldo.

After the Portuguese made clear his desire to depart Serie A heavyweights Juventus on the back of three seasons in Turin, United swooped decisively for his signature, beating out competition from neighbours Man City.

In turn, Ronaldo put pen to paper on a two-year contract at the Theatre of Dreams, coming full circle on the back of a 12-year spell away from the club.

CR7 latest

Excitement, in turn, has since inevitably begun to spread throughout the Red Devils’ fanbase.

Ronaldo has been tipped to potentially make his 2nd United bow as early as next weekend, when Solskjaer and co. welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford.

And, if the latest word stemming from the club’s official website is anything to go by, then such a possibility cannot be ruled out.

In a post across their social media platforms on Friday evening, Manchester United revealed a series of photos of their latest addition touching down in Manchester.

The 36-year-old was subsequently greeted by ex-teammate Darren Fletcher in a private airport terminal, before, crucially, an insight into exactly when he is expected to begin training with his new club was forthcoming.

As per the announcement:

‘Cristiano is now preparing to begin training with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at Carrington next week.’

Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), has enjoined members of the National Assembly not to support to move to legalise cannabis, cautioning that members who vote for it might not be able to return to their constituencies.

Marwa made the submission yesterday while fielding questions from newsmen after he met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

The former military administrator of Lagos said the World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed the dangers of cannabis to the brain, disclosing that Nigeria was the highest consumer of the substance globally.

Vowing that Nigeria would not submit to the push for its legalisation, Marwa said: “Now, the WHO itself has declared that cannabis affects the brain, alters brain function. It destabilises and affects behaviour. It also affects body organs, and at some point, it can lead to death.

“So, while we appreciate those who want to legalise it for financial gains, we have to be careful to reconcile it with life. So, it’s money versus life. And up to this point, science has not developed up to the point where it can remove the THC in cannabis to zero.

“Therefore, cannabis is harmful to our health; it is a danger to society. We must never allow its legalisation. What’s more, Nigeria has 10.6 million cannabis users; this is the highest in the world. Isn’t it sad?

“We should be the highest in science, technology, mathematics, physics and not highest in cannabis. That is something we need.

“We can never support legalisation and I don’t see how the National Assembly would pass the bill because I know 90 per cent or more of the honourable and distinguished members of the National Assembly know the implications of this legalisation. They dare not go back to their constituencies if anyone signs legalisation because we are seeing the implication on the ground. The youth, the families are being destroyed because of cannabis and drugs. It wouldn’t be legalised by the grace of God.”

Marwa, who revealed that he has received constant death threats from criminals in the course of his assignment, said he was not concerned even though he takes precautions.

Specifically, on the threats, he quipped: “Severally! It’s almost a daily occurrence because my phone number is open. Equally, messages come through family, through colleagues, and sometimes people at random whom we don’t know but I live in the territory. That said, we also take precautions.”

The NDLEA boss said he was at that presidential villa to brief President Buhari on the recent activities of the agency, especially the move to construct barracks for personnel of the agency, saying he received a positive response from the president on the initiative.

He added: “We have, as you know, personnel in the 36 states of the federation and FCT. Therefore, we expect barracks in all the locations. The budgetary provision is something that I will not comment on at this point.

“Well, the President told us well done. And that well done does not go to Gen. Marwa but the NDLEA officers and men. And if there’s a secret behind it, we thank the Almighty God for the successes recorded so far, and also to the gallant and professional officers and men of the NDLEA who have remained upstanding.”

All isn’t well in the Idibia household as the cracks in Innocent Tuface Idibia and Annie Idibia’s marriage became the subject of public discourse on Friday.

Annie had on Thursday taken to her Instagram page to allege that her husband was cheating on her with one of his baby mamas, Pero Adeniyi, with whom he has three children.

The allegations were not allowed to go unanswered as friends, family and associates reacted.

From TuFace’s brother to Annie Idibia’s colleagues and associates, everyone seem to have an opinion on their eight-year-old union.

A number of friends who shared their opinions on the allegation chided the singer’s wife for washing their dirty linen in public.

Her elder brother, Uduak Macaulay, had criticised his sister saying he has cut ties with her.

“This is for mutual friends and family, I just want to announce the entity and actress known as Annie Idibia has ceased to be friend, family, sister,” he wrote.

“Don’t hit me up, don’t DM me about her I have nothing connected with Annie or that brand whatsoever.”

Charles Idibia, the youngest of the Idibias in the public eye took a swipe at his sister-in-law saying he would continue to speak out against her if it will help Tuface’s life.

“Your juju and drugs are finally catching up with you. These things never end well. Even your family has disowned you, that’s how terrible you are. All the public sympathy and lies won’t save you. Your mum who didn’t last one year in your dad’s house can live in your matrimonial home since you got married to be doing juju, but juju never ends well. The truth never expires,” Charles wrote, in a now deleted Instagram post.

Nigerian music icon 2Face Idibia’s wife, Annie Idibia has called him out over his relationship with one of his baby mamas, Pero Adeniyi.

Pero is 2Face’s first baby mama and she gave birth to three kids for the music star.

Annie took to her Instagram on Thursday night to call him out over the relationship between 2face and Pero. She wrote:

I am a patient woman. I am not a fool innocent. Your family never loved me from the beginning. No matter how hard I tried. I was never worthy to them. I have made so many sacrifices for you and all your children. God knows I have I tried. Your baby mamas constantly use your children as an excuse for all sort of rubbish. I try to stay gracious. You are not the first man on the planet to have kids by different women. You can do better. Everything I do is to show the good human that you are. But today, this move done by you, Efe, Frankie and your family is unacceptable. What kind of man takes his kids to Disney and spend nights in the same apartment with his kids and their mother? How many times have you gone to see your kids with Pero? and she stay with you and the kids under the same roof?

She deleted the post some minutes after. However, 2Face’s brother replied to Annie on his own Instagram page. He accused her of using charm on 2Face among other things. He wrote:

You got married into a family of peace lovers …so peaceful that it’s actually an idibia family flaw as I have come to realise. Perhaps this has made you think that we must be fools, but trust me, we are not. You are bringing up a Disney trip that happen pre-covid19 simply because you somehow cannot totally have your way today like you are used to? Trying to paint your husband bad publicly( because he is a very private person). Is your threat tool and means of gaining control? …and I thought you were smart, abi dey dealer gave you the wrong dose today? Asking your mum who lives in one of the bedrooms to add more fire to the Juju pot is would have been a smarter move, but as God will have it, you choose today to expose yourself. You better finish what you started this Night, because maybe, just maybe the public might just help us all. Inno is dying slowly, never seen a man so unhappy in real life, but we must all maintain ‘peace’ that has never existed from day one …fuck that shit! ..am done. The idibia family never gave you peace you say, please bring out all the wrong we did to you and post on your page pls, because I have a lot to say, and am going to say it regardless.

Annie Idibia and Pero’s rift can be traced back to 2015 and 2016 when they both called each other out on social media.

Their relationship took a left turn when photos of 2Face Idibia reportedly kissing Pero at the singer’s nightclub back in 2015 broke the Internet.

2Face is yet to say anything about the issue.
