Man beats wife to death over N2,000

A 45-year-old man identified as Christopher, on Saturday night, beat his wife to death over N2,000.

The incident happened at No. 1, Agbontaen Street, beside Ebvareke Secondary School, off Agboniro Street, Uselu, Benin City.

The man was said to have pounced on his wife, Mrs. Isoken Christopher, following her failure to give him the N2,000 loan he requested from her.

The eldest child of the deceased, Augustine Christopher, said his mother was hale and hearty before the sad incident.

The 13-year old boy explained that his father, who is a menial worker with a waste manager in Benin, always beats his mother at the slightest provocation.

According to him, the event that led to his mother’s death started with a phone call from his father to his mother when he requested N2,000.

“Following the call, my father came home at about 9:00p.m. and started beating and accused her of always embarrassing him each time he requested money.

“After the beating, I was trying to give my mother a paracetamol tablet and a glass of water she asked for when my father forcefully collected the water and drug from me and threw them away.

“It was after that she went out to pour water on her body and later lie down outside.

“My father locked us (children) inside the room and went out to pounce on my mother where she was lying down outside, already weak from the beating.

“That was when neighbours came and rushed her to two different hospitals where she was pronounced dead on arrival,” he explained.

The young boy said his father smokes and was always drunk.

A neighbour to the deceased, Mrs. Florence Obahiagbon, said it was the noise from the beating that attracted their attention.

“On getting outside, we met the man beating his wife and we tried to revive her by pouring water on her because she was too weak.

“We rushed her to two hospitals within the neighbourhood where they both said she was dead on arrival.”

Brother claims deceased was tortured

There are indications that Mr. Ojukwu, the purported father of the prime suspect, Chidinma, in the brutal killing of Super TV boss, Usifo Ataga, is not her biological father.

A report yesterday, revealed that Mr. Ojukwu, who was arrested and released by the police was not her real father. According to a source, Mr. Ojukwu is not her biological father but her guardian. The source said her real name is Chidinma Blessing Egbuchu, that she is not from Abia State as claimed but from Imo State.

“She is the second child of the late Mr. Michael Egbuchu and Mrs. Kate Egbuchu. Her parents were reportedly separated in the late 90s. Her father died in 2019 and her mother remarried, now bearing Kate Idibia.

Meanwhile as investigation continues into his killing , Ataga’s brother, Dr. Isi Ataga, claimed the deceased was bound, gagged and stabbed several times before his death.

In a statement, he released on Monday, he said Usifo died a horrific death and was not stabbed two or even five times but stabbed multiple times.

“His hands were bound tightly and the marks were still all over his wrists, accompanied by evidence of torture and assault even as his corpse lay in the morgue.

“And no one in the entire building heard his screams because he was gagged. Let that sink in, he was bound, gagged and tortured!

“The now-viral video of the room with the deceased lying on the floor shows a room with blood-stained walls and floor, evidence of a ferocious struggle. One person could never have carried these out,” he said.

When The Guardian visited the suspect’s home on Monday, the father was not at home as neighbours and shop owners in the area said they do not know anything about Chidinma’s private dealings.

One of the traders, who craved anonymity, said: “Many journalists have been here on this issue. Although I have only been here for two months, I only know her not her, personal dealings.”

Further report has it that from Sunday when they checked into the apartment, Usifo’s family and friends were still able to communicate with him until Tuesday and Wednesday night when they could not reach him.

The building which is a one-bed short-let apartment has blood stain on the bed, the room scattered and huge blood clot on the floor.

Recall that the statement on Saturday by Rickey Tarfa & Co, solicitor to the family, hinted at the possibility that the actual perpetrators of the crime might be covering their tracks.

The statement, titled ‘Libelous Publications In Respect of Murder Of Michael Usifo Ataga: Demand For Restraint By Social Media Practitioners/Persons,’ urged those behind malicious social media publications to refrain from publishing falsehood that impinges negatively on the integrity of the deceased, wife, and children or face lawsuits.

“We hereby admonish the publishers of these stories to employ whatever shreds of decency and decorum they can find in themselves to desist from their false and misleading stories and let the investigating authorities carry out an effective investigation in the hope of apprehending the perpetrators of this heinous crime and their accomplices,” read the statement, signed by Olusegun Jolaawo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), on behalf of the law firm.

“Yes, we know that Chidinma Adaora Ojukwu has been arrested and yes we know that investigation is continuing. Our client is, however, convinced that there is much more to this than is already apparent from the police investigation.”

The statement noted that there are several “malicious” publications in circulation planted to embarrass and malign Mr. Ataga, his wife, Brenda, and their family “and to serve as a smokescreen to enable the perpetrators of the heinous crime cover their tracks.”

Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairmanship race and chances of the aspirants at the convention/ THE NATION

Seven are in the race for now. More may still join. Few may also withdraw along the line. But, the All Progressives Congress (APC) convention itself has remained elusive.

Although the unelected National Caretaker Committee, led by Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, has unfolded plans for ward, local government and state congresses, the fate of the national congress is hanging in the balance.

What actually is delaying the convention?

Reminiscent of how Military President Ibrahim Babangida was postponing the handover date, tinkering with the transition programme and changing the goal post amid the game, the tenure of the Buni Committee had been extended thrice. The latest extention of the tenure of the interim committee is worrisome as it is indefinite. This has fuelled speculations about an inexplicable hidden agenda.

The chairmanship aspirants, nevertheless, rely on hope, the elixir of life. The seven are from the North. This may give a vague idea of imminent rotation or zoning, both of the chairmanship and the presidency.

Former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Almakura has not publicly declared his intention. But, party sources said the chieftain of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) is a strong contender. A source said:”The president is always a fan of his old allies.” It could not be ascertained whether he will also emerge as the candidate of the APC Governors’ Forum.

Fifty five year old Senator Sani Musa, who hails from Paikoro in Niger State, has embarked on extensive consultation and mobilisation. A loyal party man, Musa has been described as a man of integrity. He is a one-time governorship contender in Niger State, a delegate to the National Convention, and a member of the APC Presidential Election Campaign Committee for 2019.

The senator had canvassed the revolution of the electoral system through the use of the card reader and Permanent Voter’s Card. Many have described him as a bridge builder who possess high inter-personal skills.

In the Senate, he had served on some committees, including Appropriation, Petroleum Resources, Foreign and Local Debts and Water Resources. In the APC, he had served as member of NEC, Contact and Strategic Committee, and Constitution Review Panel.

In 2015, he was arrested, but refused to divulge any confidential information on the card reader. The Business Administration graduate from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he was the President of Zodiac, served as Special Adviser on Investment and Infrastructure in Niger State; director of Niger State Development Company Limited, Chairman, Task Force on Environmental Management and Managing Director, First Pacific Nigeria Limited. He also obtained a Certificate in Conflict Analysis from the United States Institute of Peace. Musa is held in esteem in the senate as an organised, dedicated, passionate and hardworking politician. He is said to be goal oriented, focussed and patriotic.

Former Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Adamu is a party elder endowed with experience. He is a no-nonsense politician. He knows his onions. After serving as governor for eight years, he was elected senator. In 2007, he was a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Another aspirant is the eminent politician from Gombe State, former Governor Danjuma Goje, former Minister of State for Steel Development and now, senator. He is also a former PDP chieftain; bold and fearless.

Former Borno State Governor Modu Sheriff served as a senator before becoming governor in 2003. He served for two terms. He defected from the APC to PDP, where he was briefly the national chairman. There were allegations that he wanted to use the position as a stepping stone to the realisation of his presidential ambition. When he was shoved aside as chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi became the PDP caretaker chairman. Some months ago, Sheriff retraced his steps to the APC.

Mohammed Mustapha hails from Gambari District in the Ilorin East local government area of Kwara State. He is 48 years old.

He has distinguished himself in business, politics and humanitarian services. He founded the Saliu Mustapha Foundation to serve as a platform for human empowerment and community development.

Mustapha is a former deputy national chairman of CPC. He played a role in the merger of the CPC with other tendencies that gave birth to the APC. He was a signatory to the merger agreement on behalf of the CPC in the coalition. Before he became the deputy chairman of the CPC, he had served as an Ex-Officio and a foundation NEC member of the party.

He was the National Publicity Secretary of the Progressive Liberation Party (PLP) between 2001 and 2002 under the leadership of Dr. Ezekiel Ezeogwu. In 2003, Mustapha and other like-minds formed the Progressive Action Congress (PAC). He was the National Publicity Secretary of the party. He was a member of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) and the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO).

APC is in a dilemma. Consensus building appears difficult. There are internal contradictions. There are divisions. Can these pave the way for a peaceful convention?

Armed with a trove of information after a forensic investigation, the Federal Government is set to go after backers of leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Thursday: “We can tell you that the forensic investigation carried out so far has revealed a treasure trove of information on the proscribed IPOB leader and his collaborators.

“While the investigation continues, we assure you that none of the collaborators, irrespective of their standing in the society, will be spared.” “They will all face the full wrath of the law for their activities that challenge our nation’s sovereignty and threaten its unity.

“No one, no matter how highly-placed, is bigger than the country.”

The Nation reported on Thursday that the call logs of the IPOB leader and his various social medias accounts are being screened by security operatives to determine financiers of the group and its leader.

Mohammed spoke in Abuja on how Kanu was intercepted “and whisked back home after two years on his trail. Kanu jumped bail in 2017 and travelled out of the county.

He is now facing trial before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako, charged with treason, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms among others. His case will resume on July 26.

Also yesterday, a letter written by the government to some European embassies indicates that “Kanu instigated the killing of 60 people within four months” in the Southeast.

The minister also spoke on the efforts that led to the re-arrest of Kanu in addition to assuring the public that the IPOB leader will be given fair hearing.

He also shed light on the opulent lifestyle Kanu lived abroad using the funds being channeled to IPOB.

He said: “There have been speculations on how this re-arrest was pulled off and in which country the hitherto fugitive leader of the proscribed IPOB was nabbed.

“ What we can tell you, is that the re-arrest was made possible by the diligent efforts of our security and intelligence agencies, in collaboration with countries with which we have obligations. We continue to respect and honour the obligations.

“It will interest Nigerians to know that for over two years, our security and intelligence agencies were on the trail of the proscribed IPOB leader as he lived a five-star life across several countries, travelling on chartered private jets, living in luxury apartments and turning out in designing clothes and shoes.

“ Of course, as we all saw, he was wearing an attire made by Fendi, a luxury Italian fashion brand, when he was arrested.”

Mohammed explained that many security agencies worked to effect Kanu’s arrest which he said was “made possible through the collaboration of Nigerian security and intelligence agencies.

“The Federal Government wishes to commend the Nigerian security and intelligence agencies, who collaborated to re-arrest the proscribed IPOB leader in one of the most classic operations of its type in the world.

“ We commend the professionalism, diligence, patriotism and painstaking efforts of our security and intelligence agencies.

“ We also thank the sister international agencies that collaborated with us to pull off this arrest.”

Mohammed assured all those seeking justice for Kanu that the suspect will get a fair trial.

“ It is interesting that many are suddenly calling for a fair trial for Kanu as if he didn’t get one before he decided to jump bail and flee. “However, I can assure you that the fair deal that Kanu denied many of the victims of the violence which he willfully instigated through his broadcasts and tweets will not be denied him.”

Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has urged the Federal Government to embrace caution and strict adherence to the rule of law in the handling of Nnamdi Kanu’s issue.

The Senator in a statement released by his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom, in Abuja on Wednesday, also advised the federal government to be guided by the provisions of Section 31 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.

Kanu was on Tuesday remanded in DSS custody by the Federal High Court as the Federal Government re arraigned him and re-arraiged in continuation of his trial.

Abaribed said the said the relevant section and charter presupposes that the detainee should be humanely treated while in the custody of the state.

“What it means is that it is the duty of the government in this instance to protect him and ensure the respect of his fundamental human rights while his trial lasts. For now, it is trite law, that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” Abaribe said.

However, the Minority Leader called for calm saying that the recent events presents ample opportunity for dialogue and for the federal government to address the contending issues that seems to challenge the peace and unity of the country.

There are a couple of recorded confessions by a teenage Romelu Lukaku – during his first stint with Chelsea – that say plenty about his character. After Chelsea won the FA Cup in 2012, Lukaku refused to celebrate with the trophy because he hadn’t really contributed to the win – with just one substitute appearance in the campaign. “When (Salomon) Kalou put the cup on my lap in the bus, I asked him to take it away immediately. I didn’t want to touch it,” Lukaku is quoted as saying. Same story a fortnight later too, after Chelsea won their maiden Champions League in Munich. When asked “why”, the Belgian told BBC: “It wasn’t me, but my team that won.”

Over the next many years, Lukaku would go on to cop massive amounts of criticism for all kinds of unwarranted stuff. Not just for his attitude and size (Gary Neville infamously called him “overweight and unprofessional”) but also over his race (Lukaku wrote in The Player’s Tribune about how, when things weren’t going well, he was always “the Belgian striker of Congolese descent”). But what ostensibly stung more than disparaging remarks was the fact that Lukaku had gone trophyless since leaving Anderlecht as a kid – despite playing for many great football clubs and a great country.

Until May this year, that is. Lukaku’s 24 goals in the Serie A (only Juventus’s Cristiano Ronaldo scored more) earned Inter Milan their first title in 11 years and was the Belgian’s first trophy as an adult. But the Scudetto did more than just end Lukaku’s title drought, it broke Juventus’s nine-season stranglehold on the league. A genuine challenger to the throne also ended up inspiring neighbours AC Milan and Atalanta to take aim at the giants as well (and both finished above Juventus), which only made the club scene in Italy eminently more exciting.

That revival of Italian club football has had a tremendous impact on the ongoing European Championship. Not only is Ronaldo still topping the Golden Boot race with 5 goals, but also out of the remaining eight countries, half have Serie A players as their leading goal-scorers (or joint leading scorer). Belgium (Inter’s Lukaku), Spain (Juventus’s Alvaro Morata), Denmark (Atalanta’s Joakim Maehle) and Italy of course, with all their tournament-scorers in Ciro Immobile (Lazio), Manuel Locatelli (Sassuolo), Federico Chiesa (Juventus), Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli) and Matteo Pessina (Atalanta) playing at home.

Atalanta alone can be a good measure of Serie A’s impact on Euro 2020, with four players from their ranks finding the back of the net for different countries. That is just one less player than Manchester City’s goalscorers in this tournament. Not bad then for a club that was in the second division of Italian football as recently as 2011.

But before a squad studded with players from resurrected Serie A clubs can fully revive the Azzurri they have to get past the best that Italian club football has to offer in Lukaku. He may cut a lone figure of greatness in a Belgian squad that could lose Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne to injuries in the quarter-final, but don’t underestimate Lukaku’s hunger – especially after the Scudetto whet his appetite.

“It was important for me to start winning trophies,” said Lukaku before Belgium’s first knockout match, against Portugal. “The Serie A title with Inter gave me motivation and now I also want to win with the Red Devils too.’’

With Red Devils Manchester United, Lukaku spent two excruciating and trophyless seasons of having his class questioned. But for Red Devils as in ‘Diables Rouges’, or Belgium, he is admittedly as good as it gets. Lukaku said so himself last week when he deadpanned: “Well, now I’m world-class too.”

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), AbdulRasheed Bawa, has said a former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is under investigation.

“You asked me a question earlier about arresting people before investigation and now you are saying why didn’t we arrest Tinubu? Why didn’t you just say ‘arrest him”?” Bawa said in an exclusive interview published by ThisDay on Sunday.

“Investigation is ongoing.

“When you are investigating matters like this, they don’t end in a day.”

The wealth of the former Lagos State governor has been a major conspiracy theories spinner for more than a decade.

Tinubu has been accused of controlling the finances of Alpha Beta Consulting and for using the company to divert Lagos State funds.

A former managing director of the firm Dapo Apara accused the company, Tinubu and Akin Doherty, a former commissioner n Lagos, of money laundering, fraud, tax evasion and sundry corrupt practices in a 40-page write he submitted to a Lagos high court in 2020.

The convener of Concerned Nigerians Deji Adeyanju also submitted a petition to the EFCC to investigate Tinubu on Friday October 25th 2019 over the source of money conveyed in bullion vans to his house in Ikoyi on the eve of the 2019 presidential election

“To the best of our knowledge, Mr Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a private citizen who ordinarily should not be seen with a convoy of Bullion Vans,” Adeyanju said after submitting the petition.

“The commission would recall that it was reported all over the news that Bullion Vans allegedly Contammg an undisclosed amount of cash were Seen entering the home of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State on the eve of Nigeria presidential elections. Tinubu himself admitted to this fact While responding to questioning by journalists.” the petition reads.

Bawa didn’t state what the commission is investigating the former governor on.

The EFCC chairman, however, stated that investigations does not end in a day, noting that the commission carries out thousands of investigation on a daily basis.

“You understand? You know you are from the media,” Bawa said.

“After you will say we are doing media trial.”

“I just heard plenty bullet in my compound and gunshot in front of my house. They were shouting Sunday Igboho come out, we are DSS, we are soldiers, come out!

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), says the re arrest of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu will not stop the agitation of Biafra

The group, led by Uchenna Madu, condemned the re arrest of the IPOB leader and warned the federal government to handle him with care

MASSOB described the re arrest as inconsequential and insensitive, calling the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government “confused, blind and clueless.”

This was contained in a statement Thursday by the leader of the group, Uchenna Madu and made available to reporters in Awka

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and activities of pro Biafra agitators do not pose any danger to Nigeria existence, the problems that pose a dangerous extinction on Nigeria existence is Fulani domination of Nigeria state over the general interest of other ethnic nationalities.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has proven to be a loved figurehead in championing the self-determination struggle for the actualization and restoration of Biafra.

“Freedom can never be achieved on a platter of gold, Biafra revolutionary struggle for actualization and restoration can never be deterred or fluctuated because of Nnamdi Kanu’s current ordeals in the hands of our oppressive enemy.

“Nigeria state will soon regret arresting him because he will become a thorn in their flesh.

We shall never relent or be discomforted because of the Federal government sponsored genocidal operations in Biafra land”

“Biafra agitation is only a reaction to the many injustices, exclusion, second class citizenship, born to rule philosophy, marginalization and other forms of inequality that characterise the Nigerian state.

Nigeria is a state where some are first class citizens while others are second class; a state where some are born to rule , while others are perpetual outcasts, a state where state policy deliberately, denies us critical developmental infrastructure

“A state where prejudice, tribalism, exclusion and hate are elevated while nation-building is ignored, a state where it seems the only logic for unity is to share oil resources and not on the basis of consent, mutual respect, fraternity and shared brotherhood.” the group said

MASSOB, however, warned the Nigeria government to be careful in the way they handle Kanu, adding that they must accord him a fair and unbiased court hearing.

“The people of Biafra will never keep quiet over Nnamdi Kanu.”

MASSOB, also condemned the Military invasion and attack on Sunday Igboho’s residence which led to the killing of many.

“MASSOB will continue to support and identify with Oduduwa Republic agitation.

No amount of President Muhammadu Buhari’s intimidating military operations against the agitators of Biafra and Oduduwa Republics will deter or shake us, “Madu said.
